Am I at risk

The risk of developing Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is greater with any of the following:

  • Being obese or overweight (the greater the person’s Body Mass Index, the higher the risk of OSA)
  • Snoring
  • Small upper airway (due to comparatively large tongue or uvula)
  • Retrognathia (a chin that is recessed)
  • Family history of OSA
  • Large tonsils or adenoids
  • Consumption of alcohol or use of sedatives which may relax the tissues in the airways
  • Age (the older a patient gets, the more likely they are to have OSA)
  • Having a large neck circumference (larger than 43cm in men and 40cm in women)

  • "The test for sleep apnea was easy. I didn’t realise what a problem my sleep apnea was until I went onto treatment. Now I have more energy, my blood pressure is controlled and my wife is happy that I don’t keep her awake at night.
